Street Lighting Switch Off
Lighting our street lights late into the night in the UK will soon be a thing of the past as local councils adopt the great lighting switch off. The lighting switch off is being imposed to meet climate change targets and save money. Already tested in Buckinghamshire and set to be replicated across the country. More than 1,700 lights that illuminated over 25 miles of road have been switched off with more added to the lighting switch off. Another money saving scheme is to dim street lighting before midnight and then switch the lights off after midnight.
The obvious concern with be that street crime will rise due to the lack of lighting and the opportunity low lighting presents to muggers. To protect your property the solution is to fit security lighting to your house and garden. For urban areas the key is to blend your lighting with the neighbourhood, there are many types of lights ranging from wall lights, pillar lights and ground lights. Using a combination around your house and garden will light up the areas needed without being over bright. Some security lighting resembles football stadium lighting, not really suitable for urban areas and better suited for industrial estates.
Wall lights with built in PIR (passive infra red) work by only switching on the light when a person or object nears the light sensor. By setting the PIR wall light sensor you can control how long the light stays on for once the PIR sensor has been activated.
Another good energy saving idea is to fit solar lighting. These work by harnessing solar rays during the daylight hours to power the solar lights at night. Solar powered lighting has improved a great deal and well worth fitting, try solar wall lighting for garden walls, solar pillar lights for fence posts, pillars and finally solar powered ground lights to mark out a path or light up the flower beds.
Good quality wall lights will add plenty of security lighting and at the same time blend in with the décor and style of the house. The smart move is to fit energy saving light bulbs to outdoor lighting, these cost just a few pence to run and last for years. By fitting high quality stainless steel lighting with energy saving light bulbs you have the perfect low maintenance combination for adding security lighting around your house and garden.
