LED Lighting Information

Q.  What is LED?
A.  LED stands for Light Emitting Diode, a semiconductor that emits light.

Q.  What is the difference between LED and a garden light bulb?

A  There are incandescent light bulbs (standard type) and fluorescent light bulbs (energy efficient). Please note there are other types of light bulbs but these would not generally be used in garden lighting. The incandescent type is being phased out in preference of the fluorescent energy efficient lighting, these are compatible for use within garden lighting. Due to the nature of LED it has a far greater life expectancy than a normal or energy efficient light bulb. One LED can last 100,000 hours of use in the garden and are more reliable than a normal light bulb. For information see garden light bulbs page.

Q.  Does LED lighting cost more to run?
A. Quite the opposite, LED are more economical. A typical LED will consume less than 2 watt of power. Normal light bulbs can draw 100 watt of power. Used within solar garden application and the cost is just the price of 2 x new rechargeable cells every couple of years.

Q.  How bright are solar LED?
A.  Compared to a 60W bulb one LED would not yield the same amount of light from your garden lighting. LED angle of light dispersion is not the same as a light bulb which will light all around the garden light fitting. The brightest of an LED is intense, since most incandescent light bulbs expend up to 85% heat dissipation the LED retains most of the energy as heat. Latest LED are super bright and by fitting 2 or more LED offer higher levels of brightness for garden lighting.

Q.  Can I change the LED in my garden light?
A.  In most cases the answer is no, due to the long life of LED, typically over 20 years. LED are manufactured for the life of the garden solar light.

Q.  What happens if LED goes wrong?
LED’s have been around for many years, you’ll find them in computers, TV’s, telephones and many standard domestic appliances. The technology used on LED is virtually bullet proof. Used within garden lighting they are a perfect match for low cost, low maintenance ambient lighting in solar. For brighter light LED can be grouped and used within low voltage garden lights such as decking lights.

Q.  Are LED lights safe to use outdoors and in the garden?
A.  Garden lights are tested for an IP rating, to rate the light for outdoor use. By sealing the garden lights units and with a life long light, the LED unit has a much better application for outdoor use. When used with solar powered lighting or low voltage garden lighting it is the perfect partnership.
