Solar Cell Technology
Solar powered garden lights manufactured using the latest technology are now available - forget the old chemistry used to power solar lights and welcome in the new. Strange as it may seem but many outdoor solar garden lights are powered using Nicad technology. Why is this strange? Simply put, Nicad suffers from "memory effect" remember old mobile phones that would die soon after charging? They ran on old Nicad technology that needs to be completely flat before re-charging. If you forget to run Nicad flat it remembers the last point of charge, so will only charge from that point onwards. Not much use in the garden/outdoors, if your garden get a full 12 hours of sunshine everyday then no problem, but what’s the likelihood of that in a UK garden!!
NiCad is the wrong chemistry for outdoor solar lighting, that’s why our ultimate solar powered lights range is designed to operate on NiMH chemistry. No need to run flat before charging, just switch on your outdoor solar garden lights and with sufficient sun light they will recharge each and every time.
These newer NiMH cells are powered from a NiMH charger built into our solar garden lights. This does mean that if you have an older type Nicad solar light, changing the battery cells is unlikely to fix the problem. A new NiMH charger for the solar powered garden light would be needed, the cost would make this an expensive option.
Cells work in mAh, this denotes the strength of charge and an indication on the length of time the cell will run the solar lights before running out of charge. Depending on the cell size there is only so much you can pack into it but for solar application it will give well over 10 hours running time. So for solar powered wall lights or solar ground lights all you need is light for easy, trouble free garden lighting.
